I was Charlie Brown in “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown” in 6th grade.
I was bit by the bug at that time, propelling me into a career of being a stagehand where I painted many unreported doors. Brendan, my brother, I feel your hurt.

I went on to work as an archaeologist who worked a feature every now and then.

I feel as if Tiny Katherine Hepburn (“Tiny Kate” to her pocket-mates) would approve.

My first play. Hmm. Hard to say, as I sort of grew up in musical theater. My first memorable role was in a community theater performance of Hello Dolly. To accommodate set changes, the director added a bunch of in-front-of-the-curtain crossovers. I rode a little scooter across the stage, in front of a little girl and her family. Then we stopped, looked back, giggled and ran off in opposite directions. It was cheesy, but excellent. Also, I was wearing a little sailor suit at the time.

I never acted in a play before but I painted a door. It was purple. This was in high school. I was upset that there were no mention of my door in the school newspaper review of the show.

Tiny Katherine Hepburn has made my official list of things that make me happy, right in between Belgian waffles and (strangely enough) Cameron Frye! Can she make biweekly appearances? My first stage debut was in a musical entitled The OK Corral…where I played a feisty school marm kidnapped by a fellow fifth-grader in a nifty fake handlebar mustache. It was then when I realized I had an affinity for bonnets…

Alan Ruck seems so nice, and I laughed aloud at the story about Bear the horse. Oh, and Vanessa’s tiny Katherine Hepburn.

The first play I was ever in was a community children’s theater musical production of Pinocchio when I was five. I was in the chorus, but by the end of the production the director liked me and gave me bit parts in two extra scenes as a bird and as an extra narrator. I was supposed to “fly” down from the back of the theater past the audience and up to the stage as a scene transition with a few other birds, but I had trouble keeping up and accidentally got bonked on the head by an adult bird who could barely see through his mask in the dark. Good times 🙂

I am more happy than I can explain to hear Alan Ruck, a personal hero, use the word ‘grody.’
Great podcast and some great anecdotes! I want to hear more prank stories 🙂
My first play was a summer kids’ theater production of The Wizard of Oz. I was Glinda the good witch, and one to two heads taller than all of my costars. I felt like an Amazon warrior. Good times.

Another funny podcast. I loved the story about Barry Bostwick! I saw him in Lexx (I believe it was just the movies, not the actual show) and I’ve loved him ever since. Ruck was really engaging and had a lot of great stories. Oh, the Bear story was great, too! I winced thinking about Ruck falling off of the horses.

The first play I was in:

Kindergarten. A production of “The Three Nanny Goats Gruff.” So that all of the kindergartners had a part, there were tons of animals on stage. I played a butterfly. The goats said goodbye to me before crossing the bridge.

Alan Ruck is my favorite comedic actor and this podcast was brilliant! The first ply I was in was some story about planets in grade school. I was in grade school. Ferris Bueller and Persons Unknown were killer because of Alan. Live Long and Prosper Capt. John Harriman
